The first few days of school in America are very traumatic for Jean. She is not like the other students. Later she makes friends and enjoys her life in America. Then, before she is ready, it is time to return to Japan. Jean attends the Canadian Academy in Kobe and the American School in Shanghai. Just before her final year in high school, her family moves to Tokyo. Soon afterwards, Jean meets the grandson of the last Tokugawa Shogun. He adds excitement to her life, but also complications. All of her life Jean has tried to bring her two worlds together. Now she struggles even more with her identity. Finally Jean has some new insights that bring peace into her troubled world.
