Within the twenty-first century, dystopian fiction as a genre has become extremely popular, particularly that targeted at young adults. One of the most famous examples of this phenomenon is Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games trilogy, which has been extremely critically and financially successfuland possibly influential among its target audience. This series itself may have been partially responsible for this spike in interest in dystopian societies as, being written for slightly younger readers, it may have actually served as an introduction to the literary genre for some. Upon noticing this trend, some may wonder why dystopian societies specifically. In an attempt to answer this question, looking back at several notably influential dystopian works alongside the first book of Collins series, also called The Hunger Games, may prove useful. While the world of the novel is an original creation, several details contained in it appear to draw influence by some of its predecessors in the genre. A selection of dystopian works from the early twentieth century are considered here: Shirley Jacksons The Lottery, E. M. Forsters The Machine Stops, and Aldous Huxleys Brave New World. Those features similar to Collins later creation will be subject to analysis, alongside the specific decisions that set The Hunger Games apart. From there, the new type of dystopia being built and the societal criticisms being launched become more apparent. This sense of the new dystopia may be directly linked to the fame the series has enjoyed and the numerous young-adult dystopian works in its wake.
