Book Description :

With the popularity of the young adult fiction genre growing daily, dystopian themed novels has taken on a new prominence. The opposite of what Thomas More defined as a Utopia, the dystopia examines life within the confines of a controlling society with limited freedoms. Two exceedingly popular young adult trilogies, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, provide two outlooks on the concept of dystopia. Collins' novels explore the consequences of a society under pressure to support the materialistic goals of an all-controlling Capitol, whereas Westerfeld's novels explore the dystopian aspects within a seemingly happy Utopia. Through examining these trilogies using some of Karl Marx's essential socio-economic theories including alienation, bourgeois-proletariat relations, technological advances, and the prospective proletariat uprising, it is possible to understand the dystopian impulse in young adult fiction.
